- In deze voorstelling ondergaan de deelnemers aan een vrolijke carnavalsoptocht een angstaanjagende gedaanteverwisseling naarmate zij de berg bestijgen. Zij ontpoppen zich, zoals Ensor op de voorbereidende tekening (Koninklijke Bibliotheek Albert I, Prentenkabinet, Brussel) noteerde, tot een “helse militie op weg naar de Sabbat”. In deze prent voert Ensor voor het eerst de groteske maskerwezens ten tonele.
