- Vanuit zijn zolderatelier op de hoek van de Vlaanderenstraat en de Van Iseghemlaan in Oostende had Ensor een goed uitzicht over de stad. Het dagelijkse leven op straat legde hij vast in een groot aantal panoramische zwart krijttekeningen, soms gehoogd met aquarel en pastel. Steeds voegde Ensor verschillende fragmenten op één blad samen. Dit blad is afkomstig uit een schetsboek.
